The Larsen Variation of the King’s Indian Defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be3) was used by the famous Danish Grandmaster in the late 1970s and early 1980s, falling out of favour because antidotes where found to Larsen’s own interpretation. Yet with some new and powerful ideas this line can set Black some awkward problems and inhibit Black’s counterplay, something that most King’s Indian exponents will not relish. When Black plays the typical …e7-e5, White’s plan is just to exchange pawns, creating a near symmetrical pawn structure but with White having more space. Black can defend himself but it is not easy.
